Call for Host City 2021 [closed]

UPDATE: WCEU 2021 will take place in Porto after WCEU 2020 Porto was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation.

The Call for 2021 Host City is now closed.

We hope you’ll consider applying as Host City for WCEU 2022, and that you’ll join us for WCEU 2020 Online and WCEU 2021 Porto.

Where next for #WCEU?

Here’s an opportunity for your local WordPress community to join a historic lineup of destinations! After Leiden, Sofia, Sevilla, Vienna, Paris, Belgrade, Berlin and Porto, where will WordCamp Europe travel to next?

Every year since 2013, WordCamp Europe is organised by a team composed of two main groups: a local team and a global team. The local team is comprised of members of the host city’s WordPress community, while the global team is built around experienced WordCamp organisers from across Europe, most of whom have participated in one or more past events.

Hosting WordCamp Europe is a big responsibility. This is why the local and global teams work as one, bringing together in-depth knowledge of the local community and years of experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each year we aim to improve the application and selection process, so please read what follows carefully, even if you have participated in the past.

When will WordCamp Europe 2021 take place?

WordCamp Europe takes place in June, excluding the last weekend to avoid interfering with summer holidays in many European countries. Options for 2021 are:

  • 3-5 June
  • 10-12 June
  • 17-19 June

You can apply with any of these in mind, and the final date will be decided after the selection process.

Who can apply?

Any team that has organised one or more successful WordCamps in a European city, with at least one in 2018 and/or 2019.

“New” country vs “old” country?

We encourage everyone to apply, even if we’ve visited your country in the previous WCEU editions. If we receive two equally strong applications, one from a new country and one from a country we’ve already been to, we’ll select the new country.

How do we apply?

To apply, fill out this survey. Note that it is possible to save a partially-filled form, and come back later to complete it. It will only be considered final when the application period ends.

When are applications due?

You have until 29 February at 23:59 CET to apply.

What should we include as part of our application?

In an attempt to optimise the application process as much as possible, we’d like you to focus only on the questions from the form. No extra websites, videos, interviews or recommendations needed: just the form!

To help you even further, the WCEU Team will do research around your application and ask you all the necessary questions to learn from your local knowledge.

We applied last year. What should we do this year?

Cities that applied last year may use last year’s application, so long as they ensure all prices and numbers are updated.

Can we apply with more than one venue?

Yes, as long as they are in the same city. Complete the survey in its entirety for each venue. Do this only for the main event venue; there is no need to apply multiple times if you have different Contributor Day or After Party venue options. Instead, pick the best for your application.

What happens if my team is selected?

We will select the 2021 host city by 19 March 2020 at the latest. A few members of that team will be invited by the current team to participate in the final phase of organisation for WordCamp Europe 2020 in Porto to become familiar with the organisation process.

When will the host city be announced?

The 2021 host city will be announced publicly during closing remarks at WordCamp Europe in Porto, on Saturday 6 June 2020.

Summary

Are you a current organiser of a local WordCamp in Europe and have a team that wants to host the event in your city? If the answer is “yes,” apply to host WCEU 2021 by 29 February 2020. We’ll be in touch, and will deliver a decision by 19 March 2020.

For all other questions, please send us an email to host@wp-europe.org.

Good luck!
